Less Is More: Lingerie-Inspired Looks Dominated the Met Gala After-Parties

At last night’s Met Gala, Bella Hadid’s interpretation of the gilded glamour dress code was a formal take on goth-girl style, courtesy of Burberry. Kendall Jenner, meanwhile, offset her frou-frou Prada gown with freshly bleached brows, and Hailey Bieber posed on the steps of the Met in an angelic feathered piece that paid tribute to iconic supermodel Jerry Hall’s epic spring/summer 2002 Yves Saint Laurent catwalk moment.

The head-turning style choices didn’t end once guests were ushered out of the museum, either. As celebrities made their way to the after-parties, a second (unofficial) theme revealed itself: sheer garments and flesh-baring boudoir-inspired separates.

Hailey swapped her dramatic Saint Laurent number for a daring chainmail bra, hot pants, an oversized blazer and carmine heels by the luxe French house. Shortly after, fellow model and négligée enthusiast Kendall Jenner stepped out in an organza skirt and top with floral appliqué. New-season nude Miu Miu underwear complemented Jenner’s delicate set (so good were Jenner and Bieber’s looks, celebrity photographer Tyrell Hampton had to share a sneak peek on IG).

Bella, the queen of rebellious dressing, dabbled with yet more lace and corsetry after the sun set. She flew the flag for London-based designers in an exquisitely detailed custom outfit by Turkish designer Dilara Findikoglu. According to Findikoglu’s Instagram stories, her look comprised a “Turkish handwoven moire”, and “120-year-old belle Epoque fabric”.

Elsewhere, hours after Lily James was pictured on the step and repeat in a spellbinding cut-out Versace gown adorned with crystals, the Donatella Versace devotee turned out another traffic-stopping look. ThePam & Tommy star wore a sparkling fuchsia paperclip dress from the spring 2022 line, adding a gold Medusa motif clutch, heels and chain. It’s official: the barely-there trend is going nowhere.
